You can’t wait for the weekend to begin, but you still have to endure seven hours of classes. You are in the library before first period when the familiar ping of the bell announces the start of the day. Suddenly, music starts playing through the speakers, lifting your mood and easing your stress.
Music has the incredible ability to transport us to another world, even if it’s just for a few minutes. That’s what makes South High’s tradition of Friday music so special. It’s a weekly reminder that we can take a break from the stress of school and immerse ourselves in the power of music. Friday music has become a staple at South High, dating back to the late Mrs. Sally Passarella. It originally started as a way for clubs to promote themselves to the student body, and the practice has continued to thrive ever since.
English teacher Mr. Brian Faddé, who currently oversees the music, recalls a time in 2017 when his Facing History class created a playlist to promote school spirit. “Mrs. Passarella was all excited and happy we were doing it and felt like it was a good contribution. And then she passed away. As my own homage to her, I decided that every single week, we’re going to have music.”
Usually, a specific club creates a playlist for the week. They reach out ahead of time to Mr. Faddé to reserve a spot on the calendar. “[O]ften by November or December, the whole entire calendar is filled out. I also, in advance, pick out specific dates for [holidays] and [big performances].”
Friday music is not only a source of entertainment, but also a way of connecting with the school community and culture. Many of the songs played are popular songs from around the world, including Taylor Swift and Billboard 100 hits. The diverse selection adds to the fun, as students can enjoy the latest hits and sing along with their favorite artists. Junior Ivy Zhang agrees that “Friday music enhance[s] the school spirit… It’s a great way for students and teachers to bond. Music is a great way to make new friends.”
As the familiar tunes echo throughout the halls, Friday music remains a testament to the power of music to foster community and infuse joy. It is a reminder that amidst the academic rigors, there’s always a melody to lift spirits and create lasting memories.
