No matter if you are already a steak connoisseur or you are trying to get into steak, understanding and trying diverse steaks can help broaden your palate or even give you more options for family dinner. Either way, it is important to broaden your horizons and understand how different ethnicities go about their steak. With that being said, here is a description of how some countries go about their steak along with some restaurant recommendations.
Russia: Russian steak is usually either cooked or boiled. It’s usually served in dishes like soup and noodles. Beef Stroganoff is the most common Russian steak dish, which is served with pasta and mustard. Troyka is a great Russian steak restaurant to try in Forest Hills.
America: American steak is usually either cooked or fried. BBQ is a very popular type of American steak. Popular steaks from America include ribs, New York Strip and porterhouse. American steak at steakhouses is commonly served with mashed or baked potatoes, wine and chocolate cake. Peter Luger and Morton’s are two famous American steakhouses in the city.
Persia: Persian Steak is often either cooked by a charcoal grill. Kabab Barg and Kabab Koobideh are two common Persian steak types. Persian steaks are known for their spices and herbs, and steak at Persian steakhouses are usually served with white or yellow rice and vegetables like onions and tomatoes. I recommend two Persian restaurants: Ravagh Persian Grill and Colbeh.
Argentina: Argentinian steak is often slow cooked over an open flame. Argentinian steak is known for its grass-fed cows. Argentinian steaks include Bife de Chorizo and Ojo de Bife. Argentinian steak is often served with salad, potatoes and vegetables. Good Argentinian restaurants include El Gauchito 2 and La Fusta.
Brazil: Brazilian steak is often served buffet style at Brazilian steakhouses with gaucho chefs bringing steak cuts to the restaurant goers. Popular steak cuts from Brazil include Picahna, the sirloin cap, and Alcatra, a top sirloin cut. Brazilian steak is often lean, salty and cooked by a charcoal cooker. The main Brazilian steakhouse I strongly recommend is Fogo de Chao.
Japan: Japanese steak restaurants are often hibachi style in America. Japanese steak usually is cooked using a frying pan. Wagyu, more specifically Kobe, is the most famous and expensive Japanese steak. Japanese steak is often served with seafood, vegetables and fried rice at hibachi restaurants. Two Japanese steak restaurants I recommend are Benihana and Shogun Omasake.
