Although most would associate Asian Night with dancing, drum-beating, and other performances, each year the Global Village club sponsors an auction at the event. Global Village raises money for different charities throughout the world. The club members selected Peace House as the recipient of the proceeds. Peace House is a non-profit organization that strives to create a brighter and better future for Africa’s orphans, vulnerable children, and their communities. Peace House built a school to teach these children problem-solving and entrepreneurial business skills in hopes that these young people will create a better future for Tanzania.
Global Village will auction gift baskets to raise money to send some of these underprivileged children to school. Club members have gone to local stores to ask for donations for the baskets. One of the many baskets at the auction is a body nature basket, which will include perfumes from Hermes and scented candles. Another basket is the “Date” basket, which will include free movie tickets for two, a picnic basket, and a Panera gift card. The club also will auction signed gear from the band Dispatch.
Senior and Global Village Co-President Sydnie Spector-Salwen said, “I love the message Global Village shares with everyone. It shows how an individual can make a change in the world, which is something that the students need to take to heart.”
In accordance with its goal to offer a helping hand to those in need, Global Village is organizing several other events this year, including the teacher-student auction in the spring. Spector-Salwen is most excited for that event because she wants to see how much a student would pay for a date with social studies teacher Mr. David Moyal.
Global Village meets on Mondays in room 401 to plan other events and fundraisers. According to a club member, Global Village isn’t limited to one cause. “We are open to everything!” she said.
