Rebecca Jung sat down with Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. Michael Schwartz to review the first half of the school year.
What do you think of Great Neck South’s music department?
The music department is wonderful, and this school has very talented students.
What events and activities has the Music Department been involved with this year?
We had previously Music Night I, District Faculty Music Recital, Piano Recital, Musical: Cabaret, Winter Concert I & II, Music Dept. A.M. Daytime Assembly, and the Chamber Music Concert. Also, there was a competition called the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, a Young Musicians Program. Two South chamber music groups have been selected as winners!
What upcoming events are there?
Music Night II is coming up on March 2, and the Opera Die Fledermaus is coming to play on March 23 and 24. There are actually many things coming up such as the Spring Concert I and II and the Battle of the Bands.
What is one thing South’s Music Department should be proud of?
I think it’s impossible to point only one thing. If I had to decide, though, it would be the number of students who decided to contribute to South’ music with the academic workload they all have.
I heard that South was named a Grammy Signature School finalist for the ninth year. Do you believe South will be able to achieve a tenth consecutive year title?
I believe that is for others to decide.
All-State tryouts and NYSSMA are coming up soon. How do you feel about your students trying to achieve these goals?
I’m always proud. South has a large number of students, and many participate in music. Each year, students do extremely well in NYSSMA and All-State auditions. Even in the upcoming years, lots of our students make it into All-County and All-State.
How do you think this department could get better? What should be changed?
I believe this department has many things such as Battle of Bands for guitar, Chamber music, piano recitals, even a theory program. This department is very full and rich with opportunities. However, if someone has any suggestions, then feel free to tell me.
What do you believe is a big issue with the music department?
Nothing, it’s good as it is.
Is there any encouragement or wisdom you want to share with your music students?
I am so thankful for everyone who participates and/or participated in the performing arts program in any way.
