Rebel Olympics is a tradition at South that is designed to unite students at South and build school pride. However, many students feel that South lacks spirit. This year, changes w
ill be implemented to increase student involvement in Rebel Olympics and Spirit Week.
Representatives from Student Government and the Class Planning Committees of each grade, along with the advisers of the clubs, met to discuss how they could take Rebel Olympics in a new direction. “We wanted to change things up with new and exciting events that would involve a greater number of students,” said Senior Class President Kara Kupferberg.
One of the major changes that was decided upon was to take away the dance performances at Rebel Olympics. Recently, participation in this event has been low, making it difficult for the audience and students to be interested.
This year, each grade will instead be asked to make a five-minute video incorporating their theme that will be shown at Rebel Olympics. Each class will have the liberty to make their video unique and creative. They can include a dance or skit, as well as student interviews and picture or video montages.
The advisers also hope to increase spirit in the weeks leading up to Rebel Olympics. Starting now, students can bring in canned foods for their grade. During Spirit Week, these cans will be used in a “Canstruction” event. This activity involves students using cans to create a structure that relates to their theme. Each grade’s structure will be judged and they will receive points for Rebel Olympics.
