Imagine a space where you can connect with friends, work on various projects and crafts, listen to informative speakers, and create new memories, all in one place. Though it may be hard to believe, such a place does exist, right here at South High. Look no further than the library! Though the school library is best known for its afterschool homework center, it also provides students with many other services.
- Books (both physical and digital)
This first point might seem obvious, but one of a library’s basic functions is to provide access to books. Over the years, as technology has advanced, many libraries have offered ebooks through various apps—our school library is no exception. The mobile app Sora features South High’s ebook and audiobook collection. You can also link a Great Neck library card to access even more titles. Whether you’re craving a physical book that you can feel or an electronic book that you can carry anywhere, the library can provide. Even if a book is unavailable, you can place a hold; sometimes, the librarians can order another copy for you.
- The Makerspace
As part of the 2018 library renovation, the makerspace offers a variety of activities and craft supplies, from clean paintbrushes to bold yarn colors. The large tables and tall stools create a warm, comfortable vibe for everyone who works and collaborates there, whether it’s a class or a club working on a new project. Throughout the year, the art teachers display student artwork. Every May, the library hosts an art show that lasts for several weeks.

- Computer lab
The computer room also hosts plenty of school-related events. Every week, one of the librarians, Ms. Gina Russo, leads the Web Development club here, where students work on various projects, including website development. When there aren’t any events being hosted, students can use sound and video technology for any film or production class they’re taking. Even if you don’t need that high-tech equipment, students are always welcome to just hang out and work on the computers.
- The Utility room
Some of the most exciting services are nestled away behind the librarians’ desks. One is the library office, and the other, tucked into a corner that most people don’t see, has several pieces of crafting equipment available for student use. Have you ever heard of a sublimation printer or a Cricut machine? Well, the library offers these machines and more. A sublimation printer impresses permanent designs onto items such as water bottles and canvas bags; a Cricut Press is a machine that cuts out precise patterns. Other equipment, such as a tripod or sewing machines, is also stored there. Arguably, the most impressive machine that’s in the room is the 3D printer—you’re able to print a variety of things with this, from cute multi-colored pumpkins to a realistic cell model. To use these machines, just ask the librarians how to get started, and they’ll give you all the information you need for using the equipment. With these tools, the sky’s the limit for what you can create.

- Speakers and events
The library isn’t just a place for students to study; it also hosts a variety of events, including college visits and guest speakers. During the school year, many people are invited to speak to students. For example, last year, Mrs. Koo hosted an event where the CEO of Xi’an Famous Foods, Jason Wang, spoke about his journey, sharing anecdotes from his childhood and his partnership with his father. In a few weeks, the Great Neck Public Library will visit to teach people how to apply for both Great Neck and New York library cards. The multitude of events that the library hosts can provide students with lots of information and experiences for just an hour or so of your time.

There is plenty to explore in our school library. Whether you want to let your creative side out by crocheting or create something new with the sublimation printer, countless activities await exploration here. Libraries are more than places to borrow and read books, and ours is no exception. Take a look around, fiddle with tools that interest you, and you just might find a new hobby or skill!
